115th Proclamation of Philippine Independence

MANILA – The National Organizing Committee headed by the National Historical Commission of the Philippines and vice-chaired by the Department of the Interior and Local Government announces the various activities for this year’s celebration of Independence Day.  This year’s theme is “Kalayaan: Ambagan tungo sa Malawakang Kaunlaran”  

Simultaneous flag-raising and wreath-laying rites will be conducted at 8:00 a.m. at the Andres Bonifacio Monument, Liwasang Bonifacio, Manila with President Benigno S. Aquino III as Guest-of-Honor.  Commemorative activities will be replicated at the following sites with their respective Guests-of-Honor:  Rizal National Monument, Rizal Park, Manila with Vice-President Jejomar C. Binay; Emilio Aguinaldo Shrine, Kawit, Cavite with Senator Franklin Drilon; Barasoain Church Historical Landmark, Malolos City, Bulacan with Executive Secretary Paquito Ochoa, Jr.; Pinaglabanan Memorial Shrine, San Juan City with Sen. Gregorio Honasan; Mausoleo de los Veteranos de la Revolucion, North Cemetery, Manila with PVAO-Administrator Ernesto G. Carolina;  Bonifacio National Monument, Caloocan City with Mayor Enrico Echiverri; and Pamintuan House, Angeles City, Pampanga with NHCP Commissioner Ferdinand C. Llanes.

Highlight of the activities will be the Mga Pampamahalaang Programa at Serbisyo which will open on June 11, 9:00 a.m. at the San Lorenzo Ruiz Plaza across Quirino Grandstand, Rizal Park with MMDA Sec. Francis Tolentino as Guest-of-Honor.  Jobs Fair to be spearheaded by the Department of Labor and Employment will be on June 12 from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the South Drive (fronting the Army and Navy Club).  Medical and Dental Services to be headed by the Department of Health, Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office and City of Manila will also be held on June 12 from 7:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the shaded area of Burnham Green.

Philippine Independence was declared on June 12, 1898 at the ancestral home of Gen. Emilio Aguinaldo in Cavite el Viejo, now Kawit, Cavite. The significant event proclaimed the sovereignty and independence of the Filipino people from the Spanish colonial rule.  

The Philippine flag made in Hongkong by Mrs. Marcela Agoncillo, Lorenza Agoncillo and Delfina Herbosa was unfurled and the Marcha Filipina Magdalo, now known as the “Lupang Hinirang” was played for the first time.

The NHCP is a national government agency mandated to promote and preserve Philippine historical heritage through research, information dissemination, conservation, including the marking of historic sites and structures, and the maintenance and administration of national shrines, monuments and landmarks.
